Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university, and with a main field of study within the Social Sciences or Arts.

Language requirements: All applicants need to verify Russian language proficiency that corresponds to level B2 (according to the CEFR scale).

Learning outcomes

After the course the student should have:

Knowledge and understanding

• Demonstrate knowledge of Russian vocabulary clusters used in the social sciences
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of specific grammar points and how to apply them in speaking tasks;
• Account for the content in oral presentations and lectures 

Competence and skills

• Demonstrate the capacity to understand spoken Russian and comprehend Russian language texts with a social science theme;
• Comprehend and respond to lectures in Russian on social science topics;
• Demonstrate the ability to speak relatively fluently using social science vocabulary;
• Demonstrate the ability to speak in a structured way and make an argument with the help of language registers specific to the social sciences;
• Conduct oral presentations in Russian on a topic in the social sciences
• Plan and formulate short written reports in Russian 

Judgement and approach

• Independently select a topic for the oral presentation;
• Analyze complex language structures found in spoken and written RussianTake on problem-solving tasks in grammar, vocabulary and speech and solve assignments related to these;

Content

The course develops students' linguistic competencies in the specific domain of the social science discussions. Students will select their own social science texts and/or video or podcast clips, usually selected from Russian digital media. Students will develop oral reporting skills and the ability to make arguments around the topic. Short argumentative written reports will be required in addition to speaking tasks. The teacher, having received students' choices in advance, will decide on how to supplement the student-selected materials, anticipating and tackling specific lexical, grammatical and technical problems.

Instruction

Instruction is in the form of seminars and problem-based, context-dependent learning exercises based on texts, videos and audio files in a given social science topic.

The language of instruction is Russian.

Assessment

The course is examined by active participation in seminars, as well as by oral presentations and written assignments.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University´s disability coordinator or a decision by the department's working group for study matters.
