Entry requirements

Thermodynamics and Scientific computing I

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • describe basic processes and systems for conversion, transport and storage of energy,
  • compare processes within energy systems taking into account their efficiency and environmental sustainability,
  • perform simple calculations related to energy conversions in machines based on the principles of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics.

Content

Thermodynamics of open systems. State variables of pure substances. Thermodynamic properties and environmental impact of modern refrigerants. Energy analysis of open systems with stationary flow that contain turbines, compressors etc. Thermodynamic cycles for thermal power plants (Rankine cycle), heat engines and refrigerators (heat pumps).

Heat transfer. Mechanisms of heat transfer: conduction, convection and radiation. Steady state heat transfer, heat exchangers. Basic concepts of geothermal and solar power. Mechanism of the greenhouse effect.

Fluid mechanics. Laminar and turbulent flow, Reynolds number, viscosity, Bernoulli's equation, energy equation and momentum analysis of stationary internal and external flows of liquids and gases. Basic concepts of hydro- and wind-power generation.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars and supervised group work.

Assessment

Hand-in exercises and written mini project.
