Entry requirements
120 credits within science/engineering including Mechanics II/Applied Mechanics I. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- apply the tensor formalism,
- treat general stresses and deformations in continuous materials,
- formulate and solve specific technical problems of displacement, strain and stress
- perform experiments with stresses and deformations.
- numerically model and analyse the stresses and deformations of simple geometries under an arbitrary load in both solids and liquids.
Content
Cartesian tensors. The linear elastic boundary value problem. Boundary conditions. Naviers equations. Plane waves.
General conservation laws for mass, momentum and angular momentum.
Deformation of a continuum continuum: Euler and Lagrange descriptions, displacement vector, strain tensor, principal strains, compatibility equations.
The state of stress in a continuum continuum: stress vector, stress tensor, principal stress, equations of motion.
Constitutive equations: isotropic and anisotropic linear elastic materials
Newtonian fluids: compressible and incompressible fluids, Navier-Stokes equations.
Instruction
Lectures, guest lectures, numerical tutorials as well as laborative work in a computer lab.
Assessment
Written report on assignments of theoretical, analytical and numerical (computer models) character (5 hp).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
