Entry requirements
120 credits in science/engineering including Electromagnetism I/Electromagnetism. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course the student shall be able to:
- describe the pros and cons of using permanent magnet material
- evaluate the technical performance of permanent-magnet based magnets
- design prototype magnets
- specify a procedure to verify the performance of the magnet.
Content
Review of Maxwell's equations, magnetostatics, and the multipole expansion. Production and properties of permanent magnet material. Field calculations for permanent magnets: dipoles, quadrupoles, and undulators. Designing magnet frames (with OpenSCAD). Methods to measure the performance of the magnets.
Instruction
Lectures and computer lab.
Assessment
Active participation in class, homework assignment and written project report.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
