Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

• identify the various professions and opportunities available to them as a language professional
• apply the skills and knowledge that they have gained during their Bachelor's studies in various professional contexts
• demonstrate their proficiency in the language and rhetoric required for job applications in English
• describe different types of job seeking practices which could also include creating job opportunities
• evaluate and enhance models for internationalisation practices in the workplace.

Content

The purpose of the course is to provide students on the Global English Studies programme with an overview of the job market for language professionals and offer discursive skills to meet its challenges. The course encourages students to think actively about their future careers and explores how the skills that they have acquired throughout their Bachelor's studies can be applied in various professional contexts.  

The first part of the course focuses on evaluating student proficiency in identifying employment opportunities. The aim is also to guide students in clarifying how they see themselves within the job market. Students learn how to translate the skills and knowledge that they have obtained during their degree into a language appropriate for job applications. Examples and practical exercises are used to hone students' proficiency in the style and rhetoric required for CVs, cover letters, and emails to potential employers.

The course also explores various pathways to employment. Students learn how and where jobs are commonly advertised as well as how to use strategies such as networking to discover less "visible" opportunities. This is combined with visits from established professionals in different stages of their careers. Visits include appearances from and dialogues with both external professionals and our own staff, who offer insight into the possibilities and challenges of their professional journeys.

To further explore the multifaceted nature of the job market, the course addresses the global job market and the possibility of working internationally as well as occupations in areas such as activism, freelance, and the non-profit sector. Alongside this, students conduct a written project that merges the global framework of the GES programme and the course's focus on the job market for English language professionals. The final week of the course includes work-integrated learning in the form of workplace visits.

Instruction

Instruction will take the form of lectures, group teaching, and workplace visits.

Assessment

Examination is done in the form of continuous assessment of oral and written assignments. Grades are fail and pass.

Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail an examination twice have the right to apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

If the curriculum or the course literature for a course module is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on three occasions during the following three terms. After these three opportunities, the right normally expires. No other limitations apply regarding the number of examination opportunities.
