Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course, the student should be able to:

• demonstrate deeper insights into current trends and debates in research on antiquity
• compare and critically examine different theoretical and methodological approaches within the field
• articulate and position their own standpoint in relation to parts of previous research on antiquity 

Content

The course offers in-depth knowledge of a number of issues central to contemporary research in Classical Archaeology and Ancient History, including relevant theoretical and methodological currents. The course trains students in critical analysis of relevant and current literature. Advantages and disadvantages of overlapping perspectives and approaches are discussed.

Instruction

The teaching consists of discussion and literature seminars. Teaching is given in English.

Assessment

Examination takes place continuously through oral and short written seminar assignments and a longer written home exam. For the grade Pass, participation in the seminars and a passing grade on current written assignments is required. For the grade Pass with Distinction, the grade Pass with Distinction on the written home examination is also required.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
