Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering. Electric Measuring Techniques or Measuring Techniques. Electronics I. Electromagnetism I or Basics of Electrical Engineering III: Field Theory. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to.

  • design an electronic device suitable for high data transfer speed and wireless communication
  • draw a schematic, design a circuit layout and perform a simulation of an electronic construction in an advanced ECAD system
  • account for signal reflections and crosstalk in signal traces between components on a printed circuit board
  • assess the effect of electrical and mechanical limitations of various passive and active circuits used in today's electronics industry
  • choose an appropriate technology for an electronics design, with motivation

Content

Transmission line theory. Different types of planar transmission lines such as strip line and microstrip line. Transmission line impedance and the S matrices. EMC theory: Interference and crosstalk. Component placement and trace drawing strategy as well as termination methods for simple and differential waveguides. Schematic, layout and simulation with various ECAD systems. Practical exercises in soldering and de-soldering of modern electronic components.

Instruction

Lectures, computational tasks, laboratories, projects and computer exercises.

Assessment

Hand-in problems, laboratory exercises with written report. Project of an embedded system printed circuit board for Internet of Things (IoT) with schematic, layout and statement of EMC aspects documented in a written report.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
