Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Also required is 90 credits in psychology with at least 7.5 credits in methods and statistics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

• describe key questions concerning music and emotions;
• define and use important concepts in emotion psychology;
• compare how different disciplines view music and emotions;
• review the most important methods for studying emotions in music;
• discuss various methodological problems that characterize the domain;
• recount in broad outline the primary theories on how music arouses emotions;
• explain the ways in which music expresses and communicates emotions to listeners;
• summarize the most important applications of music and emotion research in society.

Content

The course offers an extensive overview of research questions, methods, problems, theories, findings, and applications that characterize the research domain of music and emotions.

Instruction

The course mainly consists of independent literature studies.

Assessment

Written individual examination. Grading system: A-F.
