General provisions

The course is part of the directly licensing Biomedical Laboratory Science Programme (180 credits). The training within the program follows a fixed course of study, which means that the courses must be taken in a fixed order if an individual study plan has not been established.

The course is given in semester 3 in the biomedical laboratory science programme and consists of theoretical studies and practical proficiency training. The course aims to provide students with the bases in clinical physiology and associated methodology required to perform parts in placement training and at clinical physiological laboratories.

Entry requirements

At least 40 passed credits in subjects equivalent to school year 1 in the programme. At admission to a single subject course, older biomedical science education or equivalent skills are required.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge and understanding

On completion of the course, the student is expectedto be able to:

  • account for the normal function and the pathophysiology behind common diseases concerning the heart and the peripheral circulation, the respiratory organs, and the digestive system
  • account for the theoretical background to clinical physiological and nuclear medicinal examinations performed for the diagnosis of the above diseases
  • account for training effects on different organs
  • account for basic radiophysics, radiobiology, radiopharmacy and radiation protection
  • account for clinical applications of radionuclide therapies within oncology and endocrinology.

Skills and abilities

On completion of the course, the student is expectedto be able to:

  • independently carry out a diagnostic ECG, a simple spirometry as well as measure blood pressure
  • apply safety and hygiene procedures during these examinations
  • orally and in writing present compiled results of completed examinations
  • show active participation during all laboratory sessions
  • with reasonable accuracy interpret ECG and dynamic spirometry

Evaluation ability and attitudes

On completion of the course, the student is expectedto be able to:

  • show ability to in a professional way carry out, interpret from normal values, and present the results of clinical studies on fellow students

Content

The physiology and pathophysiology and the associated methodology of the circulatory system, the respiratory system, and the digestive system

Occupational physiology and nuclear medicine with the associated methodology. Case studies.

Instruction

The teaching is given in the form of lectures, laboratory sessions, seminars, demonstrations, presentations in groups, and study visits.

Assessment

Examination takes place as an individual written examination and a practical test. Furthermore, passed laboratory sessions and other compulsory parts are required for a pass grade as well as active participation at seminars, demonstrations and study visits. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Students who have received failed on examination has the right to go through the test a further 4 times (= total 5 examinations). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee may grant additional examinations. Every time the student participates in an examination counts. Submission of so called blank examination is counted as examination.
