Learning outcomes

The course has three objectives: firstly to deepen the students' insights into the subjects under study during the first term, secondly to teach students how to search for information, and thirdly to give students the opportunity to come in contact with current mathematical research.

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• show a deeper insight into some of the areas of mathematics studied during the first term of university studies;
• independently seek mathematical information;
• give an overview of some area of research in the Department of Mathematics;
• prepare and orally present some mathematical topic.

Content

Cardinals, combinatorics, algebra, linear algebra, differential and integral calculus for one variable, topology. Information search using libraries and Internet. Interviews and conversations with researchers.

Instruction

Lectures and problem solving sessions.

Assessment

Oral and written presentation of assignments given during the course.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
