Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course, students should be able to:

  • use literary concepts and linguistic models when analysing literary fiction
  • explain basic theories about reading literature and discussing literature
  • identify linguistic challenges in fiction from a second language perspective
  • justify and explain didactic choices of fiction reading from a second language perspective

Content

The course provides an introduction to using fiction in a multilingual classroom, based on current governing documents for primary and secondary schools. The course deals with theories and models for reading and discussing literature, as well as theories and models for analysis of literary texts. The course includes reading, discussing and analysing prose, poetry and drama.

The course provides a perspective on fiction as a resource for second language learning, both in terms of the students' literary competence and linguistic competence. The course includes planning and presenting an individual teaching plan based on a novel. The teaching plan needs to be grounded in subject teaching theory.

Instruction

The instruction consists of lectures, lessons and seminars. There are mandatory components.

Assessment

Continuous assessment of oral and written tasks. Students are expected to participate actively in seminars. In all written work, the student's ability to write correct and functional factual texts, adapted to the situation and genre, is assessed. Grade U-VG.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
