Entry requirements

Introduction to Scientific Computing or Scientific Computing 1. At least 4 credits in Mechanics. Participation in Several Variable Calculus.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • carry out electric and magnetic field calculations in certain simple geometries and with certain boundary conditions
  • identify and describe the characteristics of wave motion, especially for electromagnetic waves
  • make basic calculations on interference- and diffraction phenomena when the wave source is coherent and be able to describe applications
  • account for biotechnological applications of the course content and how those relate to society
  • handle common electric and optic measurement instruments on a basic level.

Content

Electrostatics: electric charge and fields, electric potential, electric dipole, Gauss law, capacitors, electrostatic energy.

Magnetism: magnetic fields and forces.

Electromagnetic waves and optics: reflection, refraction, dispersion, polarisation, interference and diffraction.

Measurement instruments and components in circuits.

Biotechnological applications of electrostatics, magnetism, electromagnetic waves and optics.

Laboratory exercises: introduction to electric measurements and circuits, capacitor lab, polarization of light, wave character of light.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises, laboratory exercises and seminars.

Assessment

Written examination (4 credits). Oral and written presentation of laboratory exercises and seminars (1 credit).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
