Learning outcomes
Knowledge and understanding
On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
- have a more in-depth knowledge within a biomedical research area and an awareness of current scientific-, societal- and ethical questions in the field.
Competence and skills
On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate the ability to:
- search for and compile relevant scientific literature
- summarize scientific literature and critically evaluate its relevance and quality
- demonstrate knowledge of planning and executing scientific experiments
- demonstrate knowledge of analyzing scientific data
- discuss scientific data in an academic setting
- present scientific data and conclusions in both written and oral formats
- consider ethical, societal and future perspectives of a project
- write a popular science summary of their own reseach study
Judgement and approach
On completing the course, the student shall demonstrate:
- an ability to describe ethical aspects of the research and development work carried out
- an ability to assess the societal benefits of scientific work
- an ability to critically reflect on their own study and to propose relevant future research
Content
The course includes practical work corresponding to the scope of the course, providing students with the opportunity to apply and deepen their theoretical knowledge through experimental work.
The student will perform an experimental research project under individual supervision. The work includes both literature studies and scientific experiments. The experimental part is conducted under the guidance of a supervisor. The project will be presented orally and as a written report.
Instruction
The teaching is primarily conducted within the framework of a research group, where the student carries out the individual project, including literature studies and practical laboratory work, under supervision. The student is also expected to participate in the activities of the research group, such as seminars and meetings.
Assessment
To pass the course, the following are required:
- completion of an oral presentation of the project and submission of a copy of the presentation
- an approved written report of the project, formatted according to the current instructions regarding structure and the scope requirements specified for project documentation
- in addition to the general scope requirements, the report must also include a section regarding future perspectives and address ethical and societal considerations
- the report must also include a popular scientific summary
The assessment of the written report's quality and degree of goal fulfillment is conducted by the examiner. The final grade is based on a combined evaluation of all course components.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
