Entry requirements
The participant is expected to have completed the courses Physical Chemistry MN1, 10 credit points or Atomic and Molecular Physics MN1, 5 credit points as well as Mathematics and statistics NV1, 10 credit points or Mathematics 10 credit points.
Aims
The course is intended to provide basic knowledge on the interaction between the electromagnetic radiation and matter with theoretical background on laser operation, properties of laser light and some applications of lasers in spectroscopy. The course includes laboratory experiments, which illustrate the principle of laser operation and provide experimental proficiency in the application of lasers in spectroscopy.
Content
Atomic and molecular spectroscopy, electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with atoms and molecules. Principles of laser operation, properties of laser light, non-linear phenomena and the generation of short laser pulses. Laser systems and instrumentation and their application in spectroscopy. Techniques and methods of time resolved laser spectroscopy. Some application of laser spectroscopy and laboratory experiments.
Instruction
Lectures, seminars, laboratory work and demonstrations.
Assessment
Examination is arranged at the end of the course. The laboratory work must also be passed. Students who have failed a test have the right to take a new examinaiton at the end of the autumn semester, after Christmas vacation and at the end of the spring semester.
