Entry requirements

Participation in Introduction to Construction Engineering and also Building Design with Drawing (can be taken in parallel).

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, students should be able to

• explain different structures and loads for buildings,
• explain different types of earthworks and foundation methods,
• explain the structure of foundation, floor, wall and roof structures,
• carry out simplified pre-dimensioning using Swedish dimensioning tables,
• interpret and produce construction/detail drawings with CAD tools,
• use correct technical terms in Swedish related to construction technology in speech and writing.

Content

Basic concepts regarding structural parts and materials in relation to buildings. Loading principles. Different types of common frames, earthworks and foundation methods. Basic measurement techniques. Structural engineering solutions for foundation, wall and roof structures. Pre-dimensioning with dimensioning tables. Structural drawings for foundation, wall, roof for different frames and with solutions for windows and doors. Physical modelling.

Instruction

Lectures, exercises, computer exercises and seminars.

Assessment

Written exam (3 credits). Written presentation of assignments, exercises and computer exercises as well as active participation in seminars (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding targeted pedagogical support from the university's disability coordinator.

Other regulations

The course cannot be included in a degree together with 1TE441 Project 1: Designing of Detached House.
