Entry requirements

The general rules laid down by the Curriculum Committee of the Faculty of Pharmacy apply (see programme curriculum). For entry to the separate course, students are required to fulfil the basic requirements for university entry and to have at least 10 points in chemistry, of which at least 4 points in biochemistry, or have the equivalent knowledge from a medical, veterinary, dental, pharmaceutical, scientific or foreign degree course.

Aims

The course aims to give the student a knowledge of viral and cellular growth and structural differences between different cell types, the structure and function of the immune system and interaction between microorganisms and their host organisms and the actions of anti-infection and antitumour drugs.

Content

Viral and cellular growth, transmission pathways and the occurrence of microorganisms, e.g. in sick patients and carriers, important pathogens, methods of diagnosing and controlling infectious diseases, the structure and function of the immune system, virulence properties of important pathogens, different types of viruses and their reproduction, culture techniques suitable for microorganisms and viruses, mechanisms of action and uses of anti-infection agents, different mechanisms of drug resistance, how it can be studied, measured and prevented and spread of resistance.

Instruction

The course comprises lectures, laboratory sessions and group exercises.

Compulsory parts of the course: Participation in laboratory sessions and group presentations.

Assessment

Written examinations are held at the end of the course. Students are required to pass the written examination and compulsory parts of the course (examination code). Repetition of compulsory parts of the course may be done in connection with the next course at the earliest and then only if there is any vacancy. Students may resit the examination four to five weeks after completion of the course. Students are allowed to sit the examination up to six times, i.e. the first examination and five re-examinations.
