Aims
Primary goals are to make use of variational methods in order to familiarise the students with
- engineering models for structural elements,
- phenomena such as buckling and vibration,
- methods for obtaining approximate solutions.
Content
Calculus of variations: functionals, Euler- Lagrange equations, several dependent and independent variables; Methods for obtaining approximate solutions; Fundamental equations of solid mechanics: equations of equilibrium and motion, conditions of compatibility, constitutive relations; Variational principles in solid mechanics: principle of virtual work, principle of total potential energy, Hamilton's principle; Engineering models for structural elements: strings, rods, beams, membranes, plates; Phenomena: buckling and vibration.
Instruction
Lectures and lessons.
Assessment
Written examination comprising theory and problems at the end of the course.
