Content

Electrostatics: Electric charge, Coulomb's law, electric field and potential, the displacement vector, Gauss's law, capacitance, electric potential and field from electric dipole, polarisation, dielectrics, electrostatic energy, forces in capacitors.

Electric current: current density, the continuity equation, Ohm's law, Kirchhoff's laws, Joule's law,

emf, charging and discharging of capacitors.

Stationary electromagnetism: magnetic field, magnetic force, Biot-Savart's law, magnetic dipoles, magnetic polarisation, dia-, para- and ferromagnetism, hysteresis, hysteresis loss, magnetic circuits, permanent magnets, boundary conditions of the magnetic fields.

Electromagnetic induction: Faraday's law, Lenz' law, self-induction, magnetic field energy, currents in R-L circuits, mutual inductance. Maxwell's equations.

Alternating currents : phase diagrams, the jw- method, complex power, the transformer.

Laboratory work: Oscilloscope, Capacitance experiments, Magnetic fields, Induction, Hysteresis,

Alternating current.

Instruction

Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Approved laboratory work required.
