Aims
To give the basics about equations and their
solutions, about geometry in three dimensions and
in linear algebra. The course shall also provide
the students with the calculational skill in using
the introduced concepts.
Content
Complex numbers, polynomials, induction and
algorithms. Linear systems of equations.
Successive elimination. Matrices and determinants.
Geometry in two and three
dimensions. General vector spaces, basis,
dimension. Inner product spaces, orthogonality,
orthogonalisation and projection, method of least
squares. Linear transformations and their
representations in different bases. Eigenvalues,
eigenvectors and diagonalisation. A survey of the
historical background. Symbolic Algebra Programs
may be used in the
course.
Instruction
Lectures, lessons, seminars and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination with problems and theory
questions at the end of the course. Hand-in
assignments may be given during the course.
