Entry requirements
Quantum mechanics.
Aims
The course is a continuation of the course in quantum mechanics. The aim is particularly to give a deepened understanding of chemical concepts based on knowledge of quantum mechanics and molecular physics.
Content
Many-electron atoms, effective one-particle equations. The concept of configuration and the periodic system. Hund's rules, selection rules, spectroscopy.
Atomic size, polarizability, electronegativity, amongst other properties. Atoms in magnetic fields, the Zeeman effect. X-ray and ESCA spectra. The Born-Oppenheimer approximation.
Molecular vibrations and rotations.
Photochemistry.
The molecualr orbital model. Chemical binding. Pi-electron theory. Ligand field theory. Electron energy surfaces. Lasers. Electron spin resonance.
Laboratory work: The student will be required to present both oral and written reports.
1. Photoelectron spectra.
2. Molecular calculations using quantum mechanical methods.

Instruction
Lectures, lessons and laboratory work.
Assessment
Written examination at the end of the course. Passed laboratory course is also required.
Resitting of the written exam is given twice during the academic year: at Easter and in August.
