Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university, including at least 90 credits in the social sciences or a comparable field and an independent project of at least 15 credits. Proficiency in English equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle (Bachelor's level) studies.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the module students will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• Explain and thereby demonstrate substantially advanced knowledge of current research on digital media and social change from a global perspective, with particular emphasis on the Global South;

• Critically discuss the relationship between digital media and social change, and how this relationship differs across contexts and cultures.

Skills and abilities

• Critically evaluate key themes, theories, and issues in the study of digital media and social change;

• Critically, creatively, and systematically generate new knowledge within the study of digital media and social change;

• Plan, conduct, and write an independent and reflective research review.

Judgment and approach

• Orally present and discuss one’s own and others’ research, and provide constructive feedback;

• Identify the need for further knowledge and take responsibility for one’s own learning and knowledge development;

• Demonstrate, from a global perspective, insight into how the production of knowledge influences knowledge development.

Content

The course introduces students to theories and global perspectives for analyzing the role that digital media play in social change, with particular emphasis on the Global South. The course introduces and deepens key concepts such as development and social change, as well as shifts in the constellation of actors. Particular attention is paid to the challenges faced by different actors in their attempts to pursue social change through the use of digital media in diverse contexts.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator or a decision by the department's working group for study matters.
