Aims
Having completed the course, the student shall have a knowledge of basic toxicological concepts, different types of toxicological effects registered in preclinical toxicity studies and the importance of metabolism for a drug's pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and toxicity. Having completed the course, the student shall also have a knowledge of the general principles of safety assessment of drugs.
Content
The course in basic toxicology and basic drug metabolism comprises the following topics: Basic toxicological concepts and principles; phase I and II metabolism; the importance of biotransformation for bioavailability, pharmacokinetics and individual sensitivity to drugs; the role of metabolism in drug side effects; mechanisms behind effects of drugs and other chemical substances on large organ systems; chemical carcinogenesis; embryotoxicity and toxicological risk assessment/safety evaluation.
Instruction
The course comprises lectures, seminars and/or demonstrations.
Compulsory parts of the course: Participation in group exercises and presentations.
Assessment
Written examinations are held at the end of the course. Students are required to pass the written examination (examination code) and compulsory parts of the course (examination code). Repetition of compulsory parts of the course may be done in connection with the next course at the earliest and then only if there is a vacancy.
