Entry requirements
120 credits with 60 credits in Chemistry, including 30 credits in Organic Chemistry of which 15 credits at Master's level. Organic Chemistry III or Organic Reaction Principles. Participation in Coordination and Organometallic Chemistry which can be taken in parallel. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.
Learning outcomes
The course addresses theoretical aspects of advanced organic synthesis. On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- apply advanced retrosynthetic methodology to suggest efficient synthetic routes for complex organic molecules from simple starting materials,
- analyze and evaluate different synthetic routes to complex organic molecules by highlighting their advantages and limitations using arguments grounded in established organic-chemical principles,
- combine oral argumentation with clear illustrations of key transformations and reaction mechanisms when evaluating different synthetic routes.
Content
Advanced synthetic theory and retrosynthetic methodology, strategies for the synthesis of natural products, classical and modern transformations for the construction of complex molecules and the use of protecting groups as well as protecting‑group‑free chemistry when planning syntheses.
Instruction
Lectures and obligatory seminars
Assessment
Oral exam and obligatory seminars (5 credits).
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
