Learning outcomes

The course will give basic knowledge of heart, lung and blood vessel diseases, as well as endocrine and infectious diseases.

The course will also give basic knowledge of risks and complications as well as medical treatment of these diseases.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

After course finish the student must be able to:

- describe common heart-lung diseases and their medical treatment

- describe obstructive and restrictive pulmonary diseases and their medical treatment

- describe endocrine diseases, such as diabetes mellitus, the metabolic syndrome, obesity and osteoporosis, complicating conditions and their medical treatment

- describe musculo-skeletal and rheumatic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, systemic rheumatic diseases and their medical treatment

describe relevant infectious diseases and their medical treatment

superficially overview kidney and gastrointestinal diseases and their treatment

superficially overview haematological diseases and their treatment

superficially overview malignant diseases, their treatment and complications such as lymphedema

- describe medical complications as a consequence life style habits with influence on health such as low physical activity, smoking and alcohol abuse.

EVALUATION SKILLS AND ATTITUDES

To be able to understand diseases of internal medicine with symptoms from muscles and skeleton, as well as complications and risks involved with diseases of internal medicine.

Content

Diseases of internal medicine comprising pathological changes, symptoms and functional disturbances, diagnostics, treatment and prognosis of the most common heart, lung and blood vessel diseases, as well as endocrine diseases, infectious diseases and rheumatic diseases.

Instruction

Teaching is given as lectures, patient seminars and group presentations and discussions

Assessment

Approved by written examination. Active participation in patient seminars.

Students who have failed the examination have the right to undergo renewed examination further 4 times (=totalt 5 the examination occasions). If special circumstances apply, the programme committee can admit additional examination. Each time the student participates in an examination is counted as one examination attempt. Submission of a so-called blank exam is counted as an examination attempt. The student has right to request a change of examiner after two failed examinations.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
