Interview with Jing Qin

Ingress

Globala möten

Why did you choose this particular program?

Out of personal interest in history.

What did your academic path look like before you started this program?

Attend undergraduate school and study most history, whether global or regional.

What has been the most fun and interesting part of your studies so far?

The seminar is the part I really like. It broadens my horizons by communicating with people from different regions, including the teachers.

What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of your studies?

I must admit that it is a language problem. Teaching and outputting in a foreign language is not as easy as I thought. Sometimes it drives me crazy.

How would you describe your experience of the difference between a bachelor’s and a master’s program?

During my undergraduate studies, I took a lot of classes and had a general understanding of the historical background, but not in depth. During my graduate studies, I needed to think more on my own, think more deeply, and choose projects I was interested in and wanted to study seriously.

If you completed your bachelor’s degree at another university: What differences have you noticed between Uppsala University and your home university?

There is more freedom in Uppsala, students can study independently and have relaxed conversations with teachers.
During my undergraduate studies, the teachers did not interact much with the students, and there were also a lot of assignments and exams.

What skills have you developed during your time as a student in this program - both academic and those of everyday life?

I can express my thoughts more freely, no matter if they make sense or not. This has a great impact on my studies and personal life.

Do you have any specific goals with your education? Which ones?

No.

Has the program met your expectations so far?

It met my expectations. It would be better if more courses or seminars could be added.

What would you say to someone considering applying to one of the master’s programs at the Department of History at Uppsala University?

This is a great opportunity to learn and communicate, especially for international students. However, you need to verify whether you are suitable for this kind of education, which requires a lot of independent learning. If you need more control from the school, you should consider it carefully.

What is the best part of studying at Uppsala University?

I like this school and this city very much. There are many students from different regions here, and I can communicate with many people.

Outside of your studies, what do you enjoy doing in Uppsala?

I discovered a hobby I never had before, walking outdoors. Sweden has many beautiful forests, and it is very pleasant to take a daily walk in them.

Rapid fire:

  • What is your favorite place in Uppsala or its surroundings?
    • Definitely the cathedral. Every time my friends come to visit Uppsala, I take them to see the cathedral.
  • Where is the best place to study?
    • I like the Department of Government. Sitting in the classrooms there, you can look far away and see the cathedral.
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?
    • I'm not sure what will happen, but I hope that my passion for history remains and always will be.
