Dr. Kailash Singh Receives Prestigious Starting Grant from the Swedish Research Council

Dr. Kailash Singh (Docent/Lecturer in Medical Cell Biology) at the Department of Medical Cell Biology has been awarded a highly competitive 4-year Starting Grant from the Swedish Research Council (VR), amounting to 6 million SEK.

Dr. Singh’s research aims to deepen the understanding of tissue-specific regulatory immune cell responses in diabetic complications, with a particular focus on kidney disease. The project also seeks to develop strategies to target specific immune cell populations to prevent diabetes-induced kidney damage.

This award builds on Dr. Singh’s strong record of international research excellence. In 2018, he received an International Postdoctoral Fellowship from the Swedish Research Council to conduct research in the laboratory of Professor Adrian Liston at the University of Cambridge, UK (2019–2021). During this period, he contributed to several high-impact publications in leading journals, including Nature Immunology, Science Immunology, and the Journal of Experimental Medicine. In addition, he was awarded a competitive fellowship from the European Federation of Immunology Societies (EFIS) to undertake postdoctoral research in the laboratory of Professor Bart O. Roep (2018).

Dr. Singh has also been honored with multiple prestigious awards, including the Johnny Ludvigsson Prize (2024) for outstanding research in type 1 diabetes.

The long-term goal of Dr. Singh’s research team is to contribute to the development of therapeutic strategies to cure diabetes and reduce the burden of diabetes-related complications.
