Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • account for the geography, geology and biology of the Baltic Region- the Baltic Sea's environmental problems, e.g. eutrophication, exploitation, pollutants- possible solutions for the Baltic Sea's environmental problems, e.g. nature conservation, technology, law, policy
  • analyse and evaluate issues related to the Baltic Sea's ecosystem
  • make comparative critical analyses of interdisciplinary solutions for environmental problems
  • independently carry out an excursion
  • independently gather information and write an essay

Content

Geography and biology Under this theme are included The Baltic Sea's organisms and ecosystems, its geological history, the geography and biological diversity of the catchment area . Overfertilisation the Theme includes both effects of eutrophication and measures taken to decreased discharges.

Pollutants In the course, the theme is treated pollutants in a wide sense which includes the effects both of metals and of toxic organic substances.

Possible sequences of a changed climate are also discussed . Taken action Under this theme mainly economic and legal paths towards a better environment will be treated.

Instruction

The teaching is given mainly through tasks, advanced assignments and discussions via the course platform on Internet.

The course also includes a compulsory excursion, a compulsory study visit and an independent project work.

Assessment

In order to pass the course, passed results on the course's compulsory parts are required where written tests, specialisations and discussions correspond to 6 credits, excursion report corresponds to 2 credits and essay corresponds to 2 credits.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
