Entry requirements

30 credits in environmental science, biology, earth science or geography, and The Biological Diversity of the Natural and Cultural landscape, 15 credits, or 7.5 credits in field botany and faunal studies.

Learning outcomes

After passing the course the student shall be able to:

  • show knowledge on nature conservation and conservation related methods
  • account for conservation biology and apply risk evaluation
  • describe laws and legislations related to nature conservation and various forms of subsidies for nature conservation in Sweden, and how these are governed by international laws, conventions, directives and other agreements related to nature conservation.
  • describe and evaluate work done by various authorities and organisation within the field of nature conservation
  • reflect on conflicts in and ethical aspects of various nature conservation issues

Content

The role of the scientific base for nature conservation and conservation biology and its practical applications. Measures, methods and tools for restoration, conservation and promotion of biological diversity on genetic, species and ecosystem level. Legislations, strategies and non-governmental organisations work within nature conservation on local, national and international levels. Communication and dialogue in nature conservation issues. Work done by authorities within the field of nature conservation, including handling of conflicts.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, exercises and study visits.

Assessment

The course is examined through exercises and seminars (3 credits), written and oral presentations (4 credits) and a written examination (3 credits).
