Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • account for the modern astronomical conception of the world and modern astronomical research
  • understand and explain the mechanism behind certain astronomical phenomenon
  • perform astrophysical calculations of fundamental character

Content

Planetary systems - our own and others. Stellar brightnesses, colours, distances and masses. Spectral classification. The HR-diagram. The Sun. Energy production in stars. Stellar evolution. Stellar remnants. The interstellar medium. The Milky Way galaxy. Galaxies. Big Bang and the early universe. Relativity.

Instruction

Lectures and exercises. The course makes use of subject integrated communication training with feedback and self evaluation.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course, corresponding to 4 credits. Passed hand in exercises, corresponding to 1 credit.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
