Entry requirements

120 credits and Chemical Bonding in Molecules and Materials and Introduction to Materials Science. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • use models, terminology and working methods used in applied molecular physics and links to quantum materials, energy materials, nano and condensed matter physics applications
  • assess, report and present the chemical structure, dynamics and electron structure for modern molecular materials
  • analyse different applications of molecular materials

Content

Molecular physics including molecular orbital theory and electronic structure for small to large-sized molecular systems; molecular interactions and coupling molecular physics with thermodynamics and electrochemical properties; selected spectroscopic methods for fundamental and applied molecular physics; simulation methods for molecular systems; structure and function of larger systems, e.g. biomolecules, clusters and nanomaterials; functional molecular surface layers as used in e.g. batteries, solar cells and for artificial photosynthesis; Two dimensional quantum crystals for nanoelectronic and spintronic applications.

Instruction

Lectures. Research seminars and laboratory visits to scientists active in material physics related research. Project work.

Assessment

Active participation in class, research visits, hand-in exercises (3 credits). Written report and oral presentation of a project (2 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
