Entry requirements

One of the following is required: (1) 120 credits within the Master's Programme in Chemical Engineering. Biochemical Technology, 10 credits. 5 credits in chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences at Master's level. Development of Biologicals, 7.5 credits; (2) A Bachelor's degree of 180 credits including 15 credits in pharmacology and physiology as well as 15 credits in general and organic chemistry. 5 credits in chemistry or pharmaceutical sciences at Master's level. Development of Biologicals, 7.5 credits; (3) Within the Master of Science Programme in Pharmacy, participation in all courses of semesters 1-7 and at least 150 credits in the programme including Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, as well as Development of Biologicals, 7.5 credits, are required. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student shall be able to:

  • choose strategies for the design and production of biologicals
  • specify appropriate methods for the analysis of produced material
  • plan and evaluate projects for the development of biologicals, incl. designing a project plan with timelines and resources
  • prepare and present documentation for patent application and commercialization.

Content

The course focuses on technical design and implementation of development projects for biologicals. Practical prerequisites for production on a commercial scale, incl. recombinant production systems, purification and analysis. Product quality and safety.

Instruction

Lectures, seminars, group work in project form, possibly study visit.

Assessment

Oral presentation of the project and written project report, with emphasis on individual contribution to the project work.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
