Entry requirements

Option 1: Bachelor degree of at least 180 credits, and in addition completed courses totalling 50 credits at the second cycle (advanced level) within the main field of Materials Engineering including the courses Introduction to Materials Engineering and Surface Characterisation. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. (A Swedish Bachelor's degree fulfils the requirement in English.)

Option 2: Bachelor degree of at least 180 credits, and in addition completed courses totalling 50 credits at the second cycle (advanced level) within the main field of Materials Engineering including at least one of the courses Additive Manufacturing in Polymeric Materials and Additive Manufacturing in Metallic and Ceramic Materials. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6. (A Swedish Bachelor's degree fulfils the requirement in English.)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • search, collect, evaluate and critically interpret relevant information in a problem related to Materials Engineering as well as critically discuss related phenomena, issues and various situations,
  • idependently identify, formulate and solve problems within Materials Engineering, even with limited information, as well as plan and carry out advanced tasks within specified time limits,
  • search, compile and use relevant literature,
  • demonstrate advanced knowledge in a specific sub-area within the field of the programme,
  • present and discuss the results in a clear and correct language both orally and in writing to different target groups,
  • demonstrate a scientific approach,
  • reason about ethical and sustainability aspects in the project,
  • provide constructive criticism on others' reports.

Content

In the degree project the student should treat and present a specific assignment. The task should be relevant to the programme that the student is to graduate from. The assignment should be chosen so that knowledge from earlier courses is applied in addition to its broadening and deepening by acquiring new knowledge necessary to carry out the work. The assignment should be possible to solve and present within the given time frame.

To achieve the goals, the student should:

  • independently, but under some supervision, define a technical problem, study it, interpret and evaluate the results as well as present the work orally and in writing,
  • search, evaluate and compile information relevant to the chosen problem,
  • participate actively in seminars and, if possible, in other activities where the work is carried out,
  • comment and provide written and oral constructive criticism (in a public debate) on other students' reports and oral presentations.

Instruction

Individual supervision

Assessment

Oral and written presentation of the degree project (further information under Other Directives). Oral and written opposition on another degree project (normally within the same programme), or equivalent (defined by the course examiner).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
