Minimum 60 credits of courses within the Master programme in Molecular medicine, including courses Medical genetics and cancer; molecular mechanisms (3MG022) and Advanced techniques in molecular medicine (3MG012).

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to

  • search, critically evaluate and compile scientific literature of relevance to the project
  • participate in planning of a scientific study, define and delimit a scientific problem and select appropriate methods, all within given time frames
  • practically carry out, independently and critically evaluate, interpret and document results of a scientific study
  • show an in-depth knowledge about theory, methods and processes within the chosen field of study
  • in proficient English present, discuss and constructively criticize, in writing and orally, own as well as others research results
  • present research and results in popular science to non-specialists
  • demonstrate an in-depththeoretical and methodological knowledge in molecular epidemiology
  • consider the social, sustainability and ethical aspects of research and development project including obtained results as well as the possible impact and consequences these might have
  • demonstrate insight into the potential and limitations of the study as well as identify the personal need of further knowledge and take responsibility for his or her on-going learning.

Content

The course consists of an independent advanced assignment and is carried out individually under supervision support. Theoretical and methodological knowledge from completed courses of the Master programme in Molecular Medicine should be applied, broadened and deepened from a scientific perspective. The work includes literature search, project planning and execution, critical analyses of own and others results and scientific literature of relevance as well as oral and written presentation. Students undertaking projects at academic departments or equivalent are expected to participate in the regular seminar activities of the research group. The course also includes a module focusing on theoretical and practical processes within molecular epidemiology.

Following tasks are included in the project work

  • A written project description including a time plan
  • Practical work in accordance to the project plan
  • Written thesis on obtained results
  • Oral presentations of the work including discussion and defence
  • Critical analysis of another students' oral and written presentation of degree project
  • A summary of project results, written in popular science.

Assessment

The project work is presented both orally and in writing according to specific instructions. To pass the course requires examiner's approval of: thesis and presentation, project plan, assessment of other students' work, presence and active participation in the seminars of all course students as well as assessment of performed work from supervisor.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
