Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the course, the partcipant should have the ability to:

  • consider the complexity that is needed in a molecule to solve a particular scientific problem.
  • evaluate cost - benefit relationship in the design and synthesis of organic molecules
  • describe and discuss design scaffolds for molecular recognition of small and biomacromolecular targets.
  • plan design and chemical modification of proteins
  • describe and discuss common properties and principles of organometallic and organocatalysts, artificial enzymes and engineered enzymes.
  • plan the preparation of simple artificial enzymes.

Content

Studies and comparison of different types of molecular recognition; small vs small (exemplified by organometallic- and organocatalysts), small vs large (exemplified by natural and artificial enzymes), large vs large (exemplified by protein protein interactions).

The student will be offered the opportunity to formulate, synthesise and evaluate a structure suitable for molecular recognition as an artificial enzyme. This will be arranged as a specialised course in chemistry, 5 HE credits, starting after the conclusion of the course.

Instruction

Lectures, theorecital exercises, projects and discussions. Exercises and projects are performed individually. Training in oral and written reports. Participation in exercises and projects is mandatory.

Assessment

Written exam at the end of the course. The exercises as well as the theoretical work must be passed in order for the student to pass the whole course. Division of points: Written exam 7 HE credits, mandatory exercises and their reports 3 HE credits. The final grade is a weighted combination of the individual grades.
