Entry requirements

At least 180 credits (i.e. three years of full-time studies), in biology, (bio-) medicine, biotechnology, pharmaceutical bioscience or similar fields giving relevant knowledge in cell biology, genetics (bio) chemistry and molecular biology. Knowledge and practical experience of laboratory experiments in life sciences. English proficiency, normally attested by means of an internationally recognised test such as TOEFL or IELTS.

Requires a certificate from the director of studies stating an approved project plan and appointed supervisor.

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student should be able to:

- Show experience and basic knowledge in the planning, execution, documentation and presentation of a research problem, corresponding to appropriate time frame and the project at hand

- Account for an in-depth knowledge in the field of research as well as evaluate and select adequate methods

- Independently evaluate and compile relevant research information in the field as well as evaluate, analyse and interpret obtained results and in correct language present and discuss these both in writing and at a seminar

Content

An independent research (or developmental) project is performed individually under the guidance of a supervisor within an academic research department, an authority or in industry and within a relevant field. The project aims to deepen as well as broaden the aptitude towards scientific research as well as the theoretical and methodological knowledge.

The work includes literature search, planning and execution of the project, critical analyses of relevant scientific literature as well as the student's own results. Oral and written presentations are also included in the work. The student is also expected to participate in relevant seminars and other regular activities in the research group.

Instruction

Teaching is provided under individual supervision and by program coordinator. The research project can be performed at an academic research department, and authority or in industry within a relevant field.

Assessment

To pass the course, both a written and an oral presentation of the research project have to be approved by supervisor and program coordinator.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

The course can be taken at any time during the year and as full or part time.

This course is given within the Master programme in Molecular Medicine.
