Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university

Learning outcomes

A student who successfully completes the course will be able to:

  • describe and compare different theoretical perspectives and approaches used in the research
  • independently define research tasks that increase our historical knowledge of the subject area
  • critically discuss why institutions governing work, migration, settlement, and poor relief differed between various parts of early modern Europe
  • independently analyse different kinds of source materials and relate them to previous research

Content

In early modern Europe, poverty was widespread and peoples’ opportunities to find work, migrate, and settle was restricted by various institutions. In this course, you will study how peoples’ living standards and agency was affected by some of these institutions: the household, master and servants’ laws, migration and settlement laws, and poor-relief systems. You will study how forms of free and unfree labour affected the conditions people work under and how the lack of an acknowledged work deeply affected peoples’ everyday lives and life experiences. This course will generally be studied from a class and gender perspective.

Instruction

The course will consist of seminars.

Assessment

Assessment will be based upon written and oral assignments. Students that have missed a small number of mandatory assignments may complete them by the end of the term at the latest. If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.
