Entry requirements

120 credits in science/engineering including Automatic Control I, Electronics I, Applied Mechanics II or Mechanics III, Scientific Computing II, Transform Methods, Linear Algebra II. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course the student should be able to

  • account for common problems for robotics,
  • briefly describe basic elements in robotics such as joints and axes and communication systems,
  • analyse kinematics and dynamics of industrial and mobile robots employing experiments and simulations,
  • program robot systems and analyse robot control systems as well as coopering robots,
  • account for common types of sensors and actuators for robots and briefly account for research and development in the field,
  • analyse different methods of motion control, positioning and navigation,
  • describe how artificial intelligence can be used to identify objects and to enhance the perception and social interaction of robots,
  • orally and in writing present the results of performed simulations and experiments.

Content

Overview of problems and applications of robotics. Kinematics and dynamics for robotic arms and mobile robots, variables for describing robotic motion. Common detectors and actuators for robots with an overview of research and development in the area. Communication systems for robots. Programming of robot systems and analysis of robotic control systems. Personal and machine safety. Multifysical robot simulation tool (Robot studio). Introduction to mobile robots. Motion control. Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially deterministic AI for governance and planning as well as introduction to stochastic AI with image analysis and object identification. Positioning and navigation. Seeing and social robots. Presentation skills.

Instruction

Lectures, lesson exercises, laboratory exercises. Guest lecture or study visit that illustrates current developments in robotics.

Assessment

Written and oral laboratory report (2 credits), peer review of report (1 credit), written exam (7 credits).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.

Other directives

The course may not be included in a degree together with 1TE752 Robot Mechanics.
