Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course students will
- have carried out investigations in schools on how to teach English grammar and writing, vocabulary or pronunciation)
- be able to demonstrate thorough knowledge of theory and methods in second-hand acquisition (English)
- be able to critically assess new teaching methods and learning strategies in second-language acquisition
- be able to assume an academic position in relation to primary and secondary material
- be able to actively and independently participate in seminar discussions by presenting delimited research topics within second language acquisition.
Content
The module primarily sets out to review methodology for teaching English language structure (grammar, vocabulary learning, and pronunciation). Students are to systematize the most important theories in second-language acquisition and make use of them in devising their own teaching methods. The module also aims to thoroughly familiarise students with methods involving the use of corpora in language teaching.
Instruction
Group sessions. Instruction, class discussions, and examinations are in English. All teaching materials are in English.
Assessment
Students are examined in the form of oral presentations, written assignments, and a written home essay. Grades are fail, pass, or pass with distinction.
Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.
Students who fail an examination twice have the right to apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners or examination forms.
Other directives
If the curriculum or the course literature for a course is changed, students have the right to be examined on the original curriculum and course literature on three occasions during the following three terms. After these three opportunities, the right normally expires.
