Learning outcomes

On completion of the course the student should be able to

  • discuss the potential and limitations of science,
  • demonstrate an ability to make assessments in, taking into account relevant scientific, social and ethical aspects,
  • assess new knowledge by critically using literature and databases within science and technology,
  • identify one's own needs to further one's knowledge and take responsibility for progress in one's education,
  • apply already acquired knowledge in physics in order to conduct a project with simulations, an experiment or a literature study within physics, and present the results following in a scientific way,
  • critically and systematically analyse and assess physical situations, even when a limited amount of information is available

Content

Lectures/seminars: practical aspects of studying at Uppsala University, Physics at Uppsala University, physics and society, theory of knowledge, scientific conduct, aspects of sustainable development. Working independently, learning collectively, how to write a report, presentation of data, ethics and plagiarism and cheating. Equal opportunities with respect to the Discrimination Act.

Project: to be defined together with the programme coordinator/study counsellor taking into consideration the student's needs and the requirements of the chosen track/profile. Examples: MATLAB, computer control of measuring devices, observational techniques in astronomy.

Instruction

Lectures and seminars with student presentations. Project work supervised by a teacher or researcher.

Assessment

Active participation (1 credit). Passed group presentation/hand-in exercises (1 credit). Project work with oral and written presentation (3 credit).
