60 credits in biology, or 45 credits in biology and 15 credits in chemistry or earth science
Learning outcomes
On completion of the course, the student should be able to:
- to search biological information on the web,
- to use basic software for studies of DNA sequences and protein structures,
- to use bioinformatics tools to solve biological problems, and
- to interpret results from various computer based methods.
Content
Treated issues; Compile sequence data. Basic sequence analysis. Databases and search in databases. Patterns in DNA sequences. Secondary structures. Three-dimensional structures of proteins. Alignments. Phylogenetic reconstructions. Metabolic reconstructions.
Instruction
Teaching consists of a series of problem-based computer exercises.
Assessment
Modules: Theory 2 credits; Computer exercises 3 credits.
To pass the course is required that all computer exercises equivalent to 3 credits is passed. The theory part is examined by a written examination equivalent to 2 credits.
If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method.
