Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • explain the role of tribology
  • analyse industrial problems
  • suggest solutions based on improved materials selection, use of tribological coatings,

    improved design or improved lubrication.

Content

Tribology is the modern science of contacting surfaces in relative motion, and hence treats friction, lubrication and wear. These are phenomena of extreme technical and economical impact. Tribology is a interdisciplinary science, weaving together knowledge from physics, chemistry, metallurgy and fluid and solid mechanics. The course specifically treats the background to materials selection for different tribological contact situations. The number of technical applications is immense, tribological problems and possibilities appear whenever moving surfaces are involved. The most demanding and important systems include the auotmotive motor and all its moving parts, the harddisc system, tools for metal cutting and forming, sliding and rolling bearings, prostheses and implant for the human body.

Instruction

Lectures, report assignments and laboratory work.

Assessment

Written examination at the end of the course. Approved reports and lab reports.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
