General provisions

The course is offered within the Master's Programme in Educational Sciences. It is also offered as a free elective course.

Entry requirements

A Bachelor's degree, equivalent to a Swedish Kandidatexamen, from an internationally recognised university. Proficiency in Swedish and English equivalent to the general entry requirements for first-cycle (Bachelor's level) studies.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should

• Be able to critically compare and review different theories of the development and socialisation of children
• Be able to understand the importance of different social and moral orders for the socialisation processes of children
• Be able to relate the socialisation processes of children to different social, cultural and institutional contexts
• Be able to, in relation to both theory and empiricism, define and use central concepts such as socialisation, everyday practice, interaction, agency and context

• Socialisation and upbringing in different social institutions such as family, pre-school and school
• Socialisation processes in peer group interaction
• Language socialisation in children's the everyday lives
• Central concepts such as children's everyday practices, socialisation processes, interaction, camaraderie and agency
• Social and moral orders in children's everyday practices
• Children's agency in socialisation processes

Instruction

Lectures, group work, workshops and seminars

Assessment

The course is assessed in the form of written examination and oral or written presentations. Continuous assessment can occur. To pass, it is required that all assignments have been completed with approved result.
