General entry requirements and English 6

Learning outcomes

Upon completing the course students will

• have some knowledge of narratological terminology
• have enhanced their ability to read English texts
• have enhanced their ability to express themselves orally and in writing in English
• have a basic ability to analyse literary texts
• have insights into the importance of a gender perspective in reading a text
• be able to discuss literary texts orally and in writing in English
• be able to argue in English in support of their interpretation of a text with references to the text
• be able to present and analyse a text in English in a brief essay.

Content

The course is devoted to a review of modern literature in English that depicts individuals and their situation in present-day society. At the same time students are trained in reading English prose and in expressing themselves in English.

Instruction

Teaching campus course: Teaching takes place through seminars. Virtual meetings may occur. Teaching is in English.

Distance learning course: Teaching takes place via web-based tools and platforms. Scheduled virtual meetings may be added. Students must complete all assignments to pass the course. Teaching is in English.

Assessment

Examination is done in the form of written assignments and a final written examination. Grades used are either Fail, Pass, or Pass with Distinction.

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the University's disability coordinator.

Students who do not achieve a passing grade on the regular examination will have another opportunity to take the examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination.

Students who fail a certain examination twice have the right upon request, following consultation with the head of department, to have another examiner appointed.

Other directives

The course cannot be counted toward a degree together with the courses English A1 or 5EN305.

If the syllabus or course reading for a component has been changed, students have a right to be examined under the original syllabus and course reading on three occasions during the following three terms. Normally this right then expires. Otherwise there are no limitations on the number of examination opportunities.
