Learning outcomes

The course provides an introduction to the relationship between Icelandic and the other Nordic languages, in particular Swedish. It will provide basic knowledge of Icelandic phonetics and grammar and some knowledge of word formation.

Upon completing the course, the student should be able to:

  • read regular prose in Icelandic with the help of dictionaries and other tools
  • describe modern Icelandic pronunciation and the major sound changes (ablaut, umlaut, vowel breaking) in order to navigate dictionaries
  • analyze important syntactic parts in texts (predicate, subject, object)
  • explain case government in Icelandic and recognize regular cases in the texts.

Instruction

Lectures and exercises. Some components may be mandatory.

Assessment

Students are assessed on the basis of a written or oral exam at the end of the course.

Students who fail a regular examination will be offered a make-up examination within a reasonable period of time after the regular examination. Students who fail a certain examination twice may apply to the head of the department for permission to change examiners or form of examination.

Grading scale: Pass, Pass with credit, Failed.

Other directives

If taken as a freestanding course, the course cannot be counted towards a degree if components of the course have already been taken as part of another course in the degree programme.
