Entry requirements

120 credits with Quantum Physics. Participation in Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics or Solid State Physics. Proficiency in English equivalent to the Swedish upper secondary course English 6.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  • apply symmetry considerations and analyze both discrete and continuous symmetries of physical systems using group theoretical tools
  • apply representation theory and decompose into irreducible representations, and apply this to physical systems
  • make computations with Lie groups and Lie algebras and construct root and weight diagrams
  • analyze the properties of physical systems under spacetime transformations using the Lorentz and Poincaré groups

Content

The course gives a general introduction to the description of symmetry properties of physical systems. Group theory and the theory of group representations and applications in physics. Group theory in quantum mechanics. Lie groups and Lie algebras with applications. Unitary and orthogonal groups, Lorentz and Poincaré groups. General treatment of Lie algebras and their representations using roots and weights. Tensor methods. Young tableaux.

Instruction

Lectures.

Assessment

Homework assignments (4 credits). Oral examination (1 hp).

If there are special reasons for doing so, an examiner may make an exception from the method of assessment indicated and allow a student to be assessed by another method. An example of special reasons might be a certificate regarding special pedagogical support from the disability coordinator of the university.
