About the course

Talk-in-interaction is the primordial context for the use and development of natural language. Spoken language evolved before written language and the young child acquires language in interaction with family and kin. Conversation is also an important resource for many social institutions such as health care, law enforcement and public education. Communicative competence is an important skill for a broad range of professionals in the public and private sectors. If you are interested in learning more about how communication works this course may be for you.

This introductory course in Conversation Analysis gives you insights into the scientific study of talk. We will cover theory and methods, review research findings and discuss the application of research findings and research ethics. Course assignments are designed to capture the different stages of the research process such as data collection, transcription and analysis.
