Partner Universities

Departments, centres, and research groups from the following European universities participate in the Summer School for the Anthropology of Development and Social Dynamics. While the core discipline around which the School is organised is Anthropology, the fields of African Studies and Development Studies, based on ethnography, are also strong research foci of the Summer School, (as is, for instance, the case for the Forum for Africa Studies, a research centre located at the Dept. of Cultural Anthropology and Ethnology at Uppsala University).

Associate Partners

The Summer School has emerged from several research clusters and scholarly associations.

  1. The Association for the Anthropology of Development and Social Change (APAD), founded in 1991, is the scholarly association from which the Summer School evolved. APAD's leadership in 1990s initiated the doctoral seminar (école doctorale) that later consolidated as the Summer School. Several coordinators of the Summer School have held leading positions in the APAD.
  2. The European Certificate in Anthropology of Social Dynamics and Development is a master programme based in a shared interest in the rapid transformations experienced by contemporary societies and an insistence on ethnographic research in seeking to understand complex social and political processes in the Global South. To a large extent, partners in the Certificate overlap with those in the Summer School. While the former focuses on the master level, the Summer School concerns the PhD level.
