Ulrika Dahl contributes to anthology on menopause

What is it, really, that we talk about when we talk about menopause? Professor Ulrika Dahl at the Centre for Gender Research is one of the contributors in a new anthology on the topic.

In the book Vad vi talar om när vi talar om klimakteriet (translated "What We Talk About When We Talk About Menopause"), researchers from the humanities and gender studies reflect on menopause as a cultural and social phenomenon. Through perspectives ranging from medical history to advertising, literature, art, and self-help culture, the reader is offered a rich and multifaceted exploration of how we talk about and understand menopause today. Several of the contributions also draw on their own personal experiences.

Ulrika Dahl’s essay explores experiences of menopause from a queer perspective. In five parts, it challenges hegemonic ideas of menopause as always a matter of a female universal loss of femininity and fertility, and advocates for queer complexity and the importance of reflecting on the norms reproduced by menopause narratives.

The book is aimed at readers both within and beyond academia.
