Half-time seminar • Subcutaneous administration of biotherapeutics

Anton Norberg Halvtidsseminarium 2026

On 23 September, SweDeliver invites to a half-time seminar with Anton Norberg, PhD student in Work Package Parenteral Drug Delivery, presenting his project: Subcutaneous administration of biotherapeutics: In vitro properties and bioavailability and absorption rate in vivo.

Peptide-based medicines offer several advantages, including their potential to be broken down into components that can be reused by the body without generating toxic degradation products. These properties make them attractive to drug developers, and the number of potential peptide-based drugs in clinical development continues to grow. Still, significant challenges remain, not least the difficulty of predicting how active pharmaceutical ingredients behave when injected into the subcutaneous tissue.

Research has traditionally relied heavily on animal models, despite the fact that they are resource-intensive and often show limited correlation with human physiology. Anton Norberg, a PhD student at SweDeliver, is now developing in vitro models to study how peptide and protein drugs interact with subcutaneous tissue. These models could ultimately enable animal-free, qualitative predictions of the bioavailability and absorption rate of subcutaneously administered drugs.

On Wednesday 23 September, Anton Norberg will present his project, Subcutaneous administration of biotherapeutics: In vitro properties and bioavailability and absorption rate in vivo, at a half-time seminar in lecture hall C8:305 at Uppsala Biomedical Centre at 10:15. The seminar is also available via Zoom (link TBA).

Researcher bio

Anton Norberg is a licensed pharmacist and graduated from Uppsala University in 2023. In the summer of 2021, Anton completed a SweDeliver summer research internship at APL. After graduating, he worked as a research engineer in Cytiva's R&D department. In autumn 2023, Anton was recruited as a PhD student to Per Hansson's research group at Uppsala University’s Department of Medicinal Chemistry.

Expert Panel

The progress of the research will be assessed by expert panel:

  • Simon Bjerregaard, Principal Scientist, Global Pharmaceutical development, Ferring Pharmaceuticals
  • Sara Mangsbo, Professor, Department of Pharmacy, Biopharmaceuticals, Uppsala University
  • Erik Sjögren, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmaceutical Bioscience, Translational Drug Discovery and Development, Uppsala University

Facts

  • SweDeliver’s research in parenteral drug delivery focuses on the development of new formulations and improved delivery systems for subcutaneous drug administration.
  • This research draws on the strong scientific expertise on self-aggregation and molecular interactions within the pharmaceutical physical chemistry group at Uppsala University.
