Joanne Woodford is a senior lecturer in healthcare sciences, docent in caring sciences, and a member of U-CARE, http://www.u-care.uu.se/. The goal with U-CARE is to increase wellbeing among patients and close ones living with somatic disease. Joanne is the deputy research group leader for CIRCLE and is an expert in intervention development, feasibility studies, and patent and public contribution in research.

Biography

  • I have a BSc in Psychology from the University of Warwick, a postgraduate certificate in Clinical Trials from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Exeter. I was appointed docent in Caring Sciences in 2025. Since 2025 I have been a senior lecturer in Healthcare Sciences with a focus on methodology.
  • From 2015-2017 I was a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the strategic research programme Uppsala University Psychosocial Care Program (U-CARE) for the strategic research area Care Sciences, http://www.u-care.uu.se/. In 2017, I became a formal member and employee of U-CARE.
  • Since 2024 I am the deputy group leader for the trans-disciplinary and multi-professional research group: CIRCLE-Complex Intervention Research in Health and Care. The group consists of around 25 persons; academics (from various disciplines) and non-academics: professor, senior lecturer, assistant senior lecturer, researchers, PhD students, research assistants, project- and research coordinators, and research partners. Numerous collaborators across the three disciplinary domains of UU; other national and international universities as well as other interest-holders join the group at seminars and other occasions.
  • Since 2011 (until 2029) I have received around 19 MSEK in external grants as main applicant and principal investigator mainly from Forte, the Kamprad Family Foundation, and the Swedish Research Council (VR).
  • Since 2009 (until 2029) I have received around 35 MSEK in external grants as co-applicant mainly from Forte, the Kamprad Family Foundation, the Swedish Research Council (VR), and the Swedish Childhood Cancer Fund.
  • I have been a collaborator and researcher supervisor for grant from EU H2020 for 2019-23 for ENTWINE, The European Training Network on Informal Care.
  • I am associated partner for Advancing Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Clinical Trials (EDICT). Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network, Horizon Europe (PI: Dr E Morrissey, University of Galway), start 2026; and for Empowering Caregivers of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders through Media Literacy (MediaCare).   • I have published around 66 peer-reviewed publications, a number of textbook chapters, approximately 75 other publications, and have two intellectual property rights.
  • I have co-authored 14 low-intensity cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) workbooks. Workbooks developed in the United Kingdom are used Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWP) within NHS Talking Therapies or other Low-intensity CBT services, and four workbooks have been translated into Arabic, Bengali, Persian Farsi, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Ukrainian, and Urdu.
  • I have supervised three PhD students as main supervisor and one PhD student as co-supervisor to examination. I am currently main supervisor for one PhD student and co-supervisor to three PhD students.
  • I have supervised one visiting MSCA Postdoctoral Fellow, one visiting MSCA Doctoral Fellow, and five Erasmus Intern Traineeships.
  • I have been a reviewer for both national (Formas, Foundation for Knowledge and Skills Development, and the Swedish Research Council) and international (Research Council of Norway, and the Swiss National Science Foundation) funding bodies.
  • Since 2019 I have been a member of the U-CARE Management Group, since 2023 a member of the U-CARE Executive Committee, and since 2025 a member of the U-CARE Education Working Group and Research Working Group.

  • My research concerns developing, testing, evaluating, and implementing complex interventions.
  • I have expertise in methods central to developing, testing, evaluating, and implementing complex interventions, e.g., evidence synthesis, feasibility studies, Studies Within Trials, controlled trials, and implementation science.
  • Currently I am principal investigator for the following research projects:
    • The INVOLVERA project aims to examine the feasibility and acceptability of a psychological intervention for people living with dementia and depression.
    • The DeCiDE project aims to develop a psychological intervention for caregiving daughters of a parent with dementia.
  • I am also conducting research with the aim to increase value of clinical research.
